Power tool accessory compatibility: what fits which tool

An accessory fits a power tool when it matches the tool's mounting interface, its size is one the tool is made for, and its rated speed is at or above the tool's top speed. Every tool type has one interface that decides the first check: the arbor on round saws, the shank clamp on jigsaws and reciprocating saws, the chuck or holder on drills and drivers, the collet on routers, the spindle thread on grinders, the pad on sanders and the battery mount on cordless tools. The guides below cover each interface in turn, in inch and metric sizes.

What decides whether an accessory fits a tool?

Three things, checked in order: the interface, the size and the speed rating. The interface is the physical connection, such as a blade's centre bore, a bit's shank or a disc's thread. The size is the diameter or length the tool is designed and guarded for. The speed rating is the maximum the accessory may turn, which must be at least the tool's maximum speed.

Most mistakes come from stopping after the first check. Makita warns that an accessory attaching to the tool does not make it safe to use; its rated speed and size must also suit the tool. A blade of a larger diameter can slide onto a smaller saw's arbor, and a large grinder wheel can thread onto a small grinder, yet both may be unguarded or overspeed. That is why each guide in this section gives the interface, the permitted size range and the speed rule together.

The table below lists the interface for each common tool type, with the usual US and European values and the guide that covers it. Where a value is a tool maker's or accessory maker's own figure rather than an industry standard, the guide names the maker. Drawings of each interface, from arbors to pad hole patterns, are free to reuse from the library of fit diagrams.

Three common interfaces to identify. Arbor or spindle: A blade or disc mounts around a shaft. Shank or collet: A holder grips the accessory's holding end. Pad or mount: A shaped interface attaches sanding or multi-tool parts.

Which saw blades fit which saws?

Round blades fit by bore and diameter, straight blades by shank, and band saw blades by length. A US full-size circular saw takes a 5/8 in bore, and worm-drive saws need the blade's diamond knockout removed; the guide to which blade fits your circular saw lists every common size. Miter saws follow their diameter, with a larger bore on the bigger class, and DeWalt limits the tooth design it allows on its own miter saws; see which blades fit your miter saw. Table saws add riving-knife and dado limits, covered in the guide to table saw arbor sizes.

Straight blades are simpler. Jigsaws take T-shank or U-shank blades, and each fits only a clamp made for it; the guide to jigsaw blade shank types explains how to tell them apart. Reciprocating blades use a universal shank that Diablo says fits all corded and cordless reciprocating saws, so length and teeth matter more than brand; see which recip blades fit your saw. Band saw blades are the exception to every rule of thumb: the length comes from the saw's manual, not from its wheel size, as the guide to choosing band saw blade width and length shows.

Which bits fit which drills, drivers and routers?

The holder decides it: jawed chucks take round and flatted shanks up to their size, hex holders take hex shanks only, SDS holders take only their own SDS shank, and router collets take only the exact shank they are bored for. Chuck size names the largest shank, not the largest hole, so a reduced-shank bit can cut a hole bigger than the chuck. The guide to 3/8-inch versus 1/2-inch chucks compares the two common classes.

Impact drivers take 1/4 in hex shanks in a quick-change holder, and impact-rated bits are built to survive the torque peaks; standard bits share the shank but can fail early. The guide to impact driver bit shanks covers insert and power bits. Rotary hammers take SDS-plus or SDS-max bits, which are not interchangeable; see SDS-Plus versus SDS-Max. Routers need a collet that matches the shank, and inch and metric shanks of similar size do not swap; the guide to 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch router shanks lists collets by router.

Which discs and pads fit grinders, sanders and multi-tools?

Grinder discs fit by centre hole or thread plus speed rating and guard; sander discs fit by diameter, hole pattern and attachment; multi-tool pads and blades fit by interface. Plain-hole grinder discs share one bore in the US and Europe, but threaded accessories do not cross over, because US grinders use 5/8–11 UNC and European grinders M14. The guide to grinder spindle and arbor fit adds speed ratings by size.

Random orbital discs come in two main diameters with several hole patterns at the larger size, and hook-and-loop and PSA backings do not swap on the same pad; the guide to which discs fit your orbital sander matches patterns to sanders. Detail sander pads differ by brand in shape and size; see which detail sander pads fit. Multi-tool blades are the most confusing case: base Starlock accessories fit older OIS tools, but universal-fit blades do not fit Starlock-only tools, and the Plus and Max classes need a tool of that class or higher. The guide to Starlock and universal multi-tool blades sets out the full matrix.

Axminster says StarlockPlus also fits some older Bosch OIS tools and all Fein multi-cutters (see conflicts). DeWalt tools use a universal adaptor for non-DeWalt accessories. Check the tool manual's accessory table.

Do batteries fit across brands?

No, with two exceptions. A battery platform is one maker's family of tools and packs that share a battery interface, so a pack fits any tool in its own platform and no tool outside it. The exceptions are cross-brand alliances: Bosch says its Professional 18V batteries work with Professional 18V tools and, through the AMPShare alliance, with 18V tools from other professional brands, and the Cordless Alliance System says its packs work across 50+ brands.

Voltage labels confuse the comparison. DeWalt says its 20V MAX label is the maximum initial voltage with no load, and the nominal voltage is 18 V, the same figure Milwaukee gives for M18. Makita's 18V LXT batteries fit only Makita 18V lithium-ion tools, and Makita markets XGT as a separate system. Tool makers' safety instructions say to use only the battery packs and chargers they designate. The battery platform cross-reference lists each platform with what its owner says it fits.

Those designated-pack instructions carry more weight than a warranty clause. The Phoenix Fire Department's December 2025 summary of its lithium-ion investigations counts 16 of 72 lithium-ion battery fires in the city that year as involving batteries that powered power tools, one of the largest device groups in its count. The figure describes one fire department's caseload, not a national rate, yet it explains why this site treats the maker's pack and charger list as part of battery fit rather than an optional extra. National recall counts are collected in the power tool battery fire statistics.

Compatibility is a chain of requirements. Mechanical interface: The accessory must mount correctly. Dimensions and ratings: Check size, clearance and speed limits. Approved application: Confirm the tool and accessory permit the operation.
A pass on one requirement does not cancel a failure on another.

Do US and European accessories interchange?

Sometimes, and the guides say which. Interfaces built to one shared design cross over: the 1/4 in hex shank, SDS shanks, T-shank and universal reciprocating shanks, and the plain 7/8 in grinder bore, which is the same hole as the European 22.23 mm. Sanding disc diameters correspond too, though hole patterns vary by maker.

Round saw blades and threaded accessories do not cross over. US circular and miter saw blades use inch bores while European blades of the same class use metric bores such as 30 mm, and saw makers forbid spacers to make a blade fit. Grinder threads differ, router collets come in inch and metric sizes, and grit numbers on fine abrasives follow two different scales. Names can mislead as well: in Bosch's European catalogue a universal-shank jigsaw blade is a U-shank blade, not one that fits every saw.

How do you check fit on a tool that is not listed?

Use the tool's own manual or rating plate; these steps work for any tool type.
  1. Find the full model number Read it from the rating plate. Regional versions of one model can use different bores, threads or collets.
  2. Identify the interface Note the arbor or bore, shank type, chuck size, collet size, spindle thread, pad size and pattern, or battery platform the manual states.
  3. Check the permitted size Use only the blade or disc diameter marked on the tool; a larger or smaller one may not be guarded properly.
  4. Compare speed ratings The accessory's maximum rated speed must be equal to or higher than the tool's no-load speed.
  5. Check the guard and adapters Confirm the tool's guard suits the accessory type and that any adapter or ring is the tool maker's own. Never use spacers or ream out a hole to make an accessory fit.

When does an accessory that fits still fail?

When the size, speed, guard or adapter is wrong, even though the mount matches. The common cases are a larger blade on a saw of a smaller class, which the guard was not built to cover; a large grinder wheel with a low speed rating on a small, fast grinder; a cut-off wheel under the open grinding guard; an SDS adapter run in hammer mode; and a router bit in a collet that nearly matches. Each is covered, with its source, in the guide for that tool.

The accessory finder shows the mounting specs each listed tool's maker publishes, which is the quickest way to start the checks above for a named model.

Questions readers ask

Are power tool accessories universal across brands?

Many are, by interface rather than by brand: reciprocating blades, T-shank jigsaw blades, hex driver bits, SDS bits and plain-hole grinder discs all cross brands. Batteries, many multi-tool blades and sander hole patterns do not.

If an accessory fits my tool, is it safe to use?

Not necessarily. Makita warns that an accessory attaching to the tool does not make it safe; its rated speed must be at least the tool's maximum speed and its size must be one the tool is made for.

Can I use a bushing to fit a blade on a different arbor?

Only the saw maker's own ring, flange side or adapter for that bore. Saw makers forbid spacers to make a blade fit the spindle, because a blade that does not match runs off-centre.

Do Starlock blades fit older multi-tools?

Base-class Starlock blades fit older Bosch OIS tools and OIS-compatible tools from other makers. StarlockPlus and StarlockMax blades need a tool of that class.
