Buyer guides: choosing blades, bits and discs by job

Each buyer guide starts from one job, such as cutting plywood, drilling stainless steel or sanding with a random orbital sander, sets out the specs that job needs, and then lists current products whose published specs meet them. The guides compare manufacturer data; nothing was bought or tested by the site, and there are no ratings, scores or prices. Before using any guide, confirm the accessory fits your tool: the arbor, shank, chuck, collet, thread or pad comes first, then the job. This page groups the guides by accessory and names the deciding spec for each.

What do the buyer guides compare?

They compare the specifications manufacturers publish against the requirements of one job. Each guide opens with what an accessory for that job should have, for example a tooth count, a TPI range, a shank type or a grain, and explains why each requirement matters. It then lists real products, identified by brand and model number, with the specs that bear on the job, who each suits and when to choose something else. The guides do not weigh country of origin, but the import figures on where blades and bits are made are published separately.

The guides do not rank products, give star ratings or name a winner, because published specs cannot show which of two blades lasts longer in your hands. Where manufacturers make claims, such as a carbide-tipped blade outlasting bi-metal, the guide reports the claim and names the maker rather than presenting it as a measured result. How products are chosen for a guide, and how the product data is checked, is set out on the methodology page, and the site's funding through Amazon links is explained in the affiliate disclosure.

Choose the accessory family before the product. Blades: Match saw type, mount and cutting material. Bits: Match holder, material and hole requirement. Abrasives: Match attachment, dimensions and intended operation.
Start with the required fit; compare products only after that.

What should you check before using any buyer guide?

Fit, then speed rating, then the job. An accessory that suits the job but not the tool is no use, and a fitting accessory with too low a speed rating is unsafe. The accessory's rated speed must be at least the tool's maximum speed, and an accessory that attaches is not automatically safe to run.

The quickest checks are the tool's manual and rating plate. The compatibility guides explain each interface, and the tool that shows your model's mounting specs gives the arbor, chuck, collet, thread or pad a listed tool's maker states. With fit settled, the sections below say which buyer guide covers your job and which spec decides it.

Which saw blade guide do you need?

Pick by saw and material: plywood on a circular saw, metal on a jigsaw, demolition on a reciprocating saw, or concrete with a diamond blade. Each has a different deciding spec.

For sheet goods, tooth count and grind decide the result. Steep Hi-ATB teeth of 30–40 degrees give chip-free cuts in melamine and veneered plywood, and crosscut blades carry far more teeth than rip blades. The guide to clean-cutting plywood blades applies this to circular saw blades.

For metal on a jigsaw, TPI follows thickness: metal blades run 14–36 TPI, finer for thinner sheet, and DeWalt says metal should never be cut with orbital action. See the guide to metal-cutting jigsaw blades. For demolition, blades for wood with nails are typically 5–7 TPI, and makers build them thicker and taller to resist bending; Lenox and Diablo both claim carbide-tipped blades last up to 50x vs. standard bi-metal (manufacturer claims). The guide to carbide demolition blades compares them. For masonry, the arbor decides which tool the blade goes on: United Abrasives describes small diamond blades with a 7/8 in arbor as grinder blades and the smaller-bore versions as circular saw blades. See concrete-cutting diamond blades.

Country of origin is not one of the deciding specs, and the trade data show why it would be a poor shortcut: the source country changes with the blade type. In 2025, the latest full year of US import data reported to UN Comtrade, Italy supplied 56% by value of the circular saw blades with a steel cutting edge (HS 820231) that the United States brought in, while Thailand and Vietnam together supplied about 41% of the other circular blades under HS 820239, the code that includes carbide-tipped and diamond blades. The guides therefore compare tooth count, grind, kerf, arbor and rated speed, which are printed on the blade whatever its origin.

Which drill bit guide do you need?

Pick by the hardest material in the hole. Steel and stainless call for HSS or cobalt twist bits; concrete, brick and block for carbide-tipped masonry bits; tile and porcelain for diamond bits cooled with water; and sheet metal for step bits.

Each guide adds the spec that splits the choice. For metal it is the steel and point: cobalt holds hardness at higher temperatures for stainless, and Starrett's split-point drills, ground to 135 degrees, start without wandering; see bits for stainless and hardened steel. For masonry it is the shank: SDS-plus bits with a 10 mm shank for rotary hammers, or round shanks for hammer drills; see drill bits for brick and block. For tile, Starrett says diamond tile drills must always be cooled with water; see porcelain and ceramic tile bits. For thin sheet and electrical boxes, a step bit drills many sizes with one tool; see step bit picks.

Large holes need a hole saw. The arbor splits the range: small saws from 9/16 to 1-3/16 in use one thread and saws from 1-1/4 and larger in another, so a kit's arbors matter as much as its saws. The guide to bi-metal hole saw sets compares kits for electricians, plumbers and home use.

Circular-blade buying starts with physical fit. Blade diameter: Must stay within the saw's approved size. Centre interface: Match the arbor and mounting requirements. Task specification: Then compare grind, tooth count and cut quality.
A favourable product description cannot override a fit mismatch.

Which driver bit or router bit guide do you need?

For an impact driver, look for impact-rated bits with a torsion zone; for a router, buy the shank your collet takes, and 1/2 in where the router accepts it. Impact-rated bits have a section, such as Wera's TZ or Milwaukee's SHOCKZONE, that absorbs torque peaks so the tip does not break or wear early, while standard bits share the 1/4 in shank but can fail early in an impact driver. The guide to impact driver bit sets compares sets from the main brands.

Router bit sets come in both shank sizes. Compact routers take only 1/4 in shanks, while larger routers usually take both, and larger shanks give more stability and less vibration. The guide to a first router bit set sorts sets by shank and by the profiles they include.

Which abrasive or multi-tool guide do you need?

For sanding discs, match the sander's pad first, then choose the grain; for flap discs, choose the shape and grain for the metal; for multi-tool blades, match the interface. Random orbital discs must match the pad's diameter, hole pattern and attachment, and hook-and-loop discs can come off and go back on as you step through grits. The guide to hook-and-loop disc packs compares packs on grain, grits and pattern.

Flap discs come flat or conical: Type 27 discs work at 0–15 degrees for finishing flat surfaces and edges, and Type 29 discs at 15–25 degrees for heavier removal. Zirconia and ceramic grains suit heavy removal on steel and stainless but need pressure to self-sharpen. See zirconia and ceramic flap discs. Multi-tool blades fit only a matching interface, and universal-fit blades do not go on Starlock-only tools; the guide to oscillating tool blade sets sorts sets by mount.

When is a buyer guide product the wrong choice?

When your tool, material or job differs from the one the guide was written for. A blade listed for a 7-1/4 in circular saw is wrong for a saw of another diameter even if the bore matches, because saw makers allow only the diameter marked on the saw. A masonry bit listed for an SDS-plus hammer is wrong for a drill with a jawed chuck. A thin cut-off wheel is wrong for grinding, however well it cuts.

Each product entry says when not to choose it, and the guides list who should avoid the picks altogether. Listings on Amazon can also differ from the maker's own data; where an Amazon title conflicts with the manufacturer's figures, the guides use the manufacturer's figures, and where a listing is a multi-pack, the guide says so.

Questions readers ask

Were the products in the buyer guides tested?

No. The guides compare published manufacturer specifications and stated applications against the needs of each job. Nothing was bought, used or measured by the site, and the guides say so.

Why are there no prices or star ratings?

Prices change too often to keep accurate, and a star rating would claim a judgement that published specs cannot support. Each guide gives the specs, who a product suits and when to choose something else instead.

Do affiliate links change which products are listed?

No. Products are chosen by their published specs against the job. The site earns a commission on qualifying Amazon purchases, which the affiliate disclosure explains.

What if a product is not on Amazon?

The guide keeps the product if its specs meet the job and marks it as not currently listed on Amazon US, rather than swapping in a different product.
