Best drill bits for concrete: SDS-plus and percussion masonry picks by shank and cutter

The right bit for concrete depends on your drill. A rotary hammer takes SDS-plus bits such as Bosch's HCK001, DeWalt's DW5470 or Milwaukee's four-cutter 48-20-7499; a hammer drill with a keyed or keyless chuck takes round-shank percussion bits such as DeWalt's DW5207. All four have carbide tips, which masonry bits need, and are sold for concrete, brick or block. Match the shank to the tool before comparing anything else. These picks compare published maker specifications; nothing was tested by us.

What should a drill bit for concrete have?

A drill bit for concrete should have a carbide tip, a shank that matches your drill, flutes that clear dust, and a diameter that matches the anchor or fixing you plan to use. Masonry bits have a brazed or solid tungsten carbide tip and are normally used with hammer action. Plain high-speed steel twist bits are made for metal and wood, not for concrete.

Shank: SDS-plus or round

SDS is a slotted shank system for rotary hammers. Grooves in the shank carry torque and lock the bit while letting it slide back and forth for the hammer blow. SDS-plus bits have a 10 mm shank with 2 open + 2 closed grooves; SDS-max bits have an 18 mm shank for heavier hammers. The two are not interchangeable. Hammer drills, by contrast, grip a round shank in a three-jaw chuck, and bits with flats ground on the shank are made to resist slipping in it. Our comparison of rotary hammer bit shanks covers both SDS systems in detail.

Cutter: two-cutter or four-cutter

The carbide tip may have two cutting edges or four. DeWalt's SDS-plus and percussion sets use a two-cutter tip; Milwaukee's MX4 uses a solid-head four-cutter design, which Milwaukee sells for concrete with rebar. Bosch's Bulldog bits use a centric carbide tip that Bosch says starts quickly in concrete. Starrett gives its own SDS-plus masonry bits a tip angle of 130 degrees; the makers below do not publish tip angles.

Flutes: clearing the dust

The flutes carry pulverised concrete out of the hole. DeWalt describes a two-stage flute with a variable helix on its SDS-plus bits and a four-flute design on its percussion bits, both aimed at clearing debris.

Diameter: matched to the anchor

Concrete holes are usually drilled for an anchor, so the anchor maker's specified bit size governs. Milwaukee states that its MX4 bits meet ANSI B212.15 to fit common anchors. Masonry bits commonly run from small to large diameters, as the material table below shows, and the SDS-plus system covers a wide span of them: Bosch's GBH 2-28 F rotary hammer, for example, is rated for hammer bits of 4 to 28 mm in concrete.

Should you drill concrete with a rotary hammer or a hammer drill?

Use a rotary hammer with SDS-plus bits for frequent or larger holes in concrete, and a hammer drill with round-shank percussion bits for occasional smaller holes in brick, block and concrete. The bit you buy follows from the tool you own.

Rotary hammers in the SDS-plus class are the lighter end of the rotary hammer range; Bosch's GBH 2-28 F weighs 3.1 kg. Cordless examples include DeWalt DCH273, which lists an SDS-Plus holder, Milwaukee 2912-20 with an SDS-Plus bit holder and Makita XRH01Z with an SDS-Plus holder. Heavier hammers of about the 5 kg class and above use SDS-max, which none of the picks here fits.

Hammer drills such as DeWalt DCD805 and Milwaukee 2904-20 have a 1/2 in three-jaw chuck. A chuck size names the largest shank it accepts, not the largest hole. That is the tool the DeWalt DW5207 percussion set is made for; DeWalt lists masonry, concrete and rock with hammer drills. Before choosing a set, look up what fits your tool in the accessory finder.

How do the concrete bit picks differ?

The picks differ first by shank, which decides the tool, then by cutter design and size range. Only the DeWalt DW5207 is for a hammer drill; the other three need an SDS-plus rotary hammer.

Bosch HCK001 vs Milwaukee 48-20-7499: small sizes or rebar?

Bosch's set runs 3/16 to 1/2 in and comes in shorter and longer lengths, which suits smaller anchors and plugs. Milwaukee's kit reaches 3/16 to 5/8 in and uses a solid-head four-cutter tip that Milwaukee sells for concrete with rebar and for spot drilling through metal decking. If your slab is reinforced or you need the larger anchor sizes, Milwaukee's published applications match; for general fixings in unreinforced concrete and block, Bosch's spread of small sizes fits.

DeWalt DW5470 vs the other SDS-plus sets: flute design

DeWalt's SDS-plus set stands out for its flute description: a two-stage flute with a variable helix and a tapered core that DeWalt says resists flute breaks, aimed at deep-hole drilling for anchors. DeWalt does not confirm the bit sizes on the page behind this pick, so check the listing before you buy if you need a particular diameter.

DW5207: when a hammer drill is all you have

The DW5207 is the only pick that fits a standard chuck. Its round shank carries three flats to resist slipping, and its four-flute body clears debris. It drills concrete, block and rock in hammer mode, and it is the set to choose if you do not own a rotary hammer.

Separate the holding end from the cutting requirement. Shank: Must suit the drill or rotary-hammer holder. Cutting tip: Must be intended for the masonry material. Larger opening: A suitable core or hole-making system may be needed.
A concrete-cutting accessory is not defined by its diameter alone.

When is a masonry bit the wrong choice?

A masonry bit is the wrong choice for glazed tile and porcelain, for metal, and for any tool whose holder it does not fit. Masonry bits are made for hammer drilling in concrete and masonry, and the other materials each have their own published bit type.

  • Ceramic tile, porcelain and glass. The material table pairs these with diamond core bits or diamond hole saws, cooled with water, or a spear-point carbide bit for glass run at low speed. Our guide to diamond tile bit picks covers the bits for those surfaces.
  • Metal. Steel and aluminium call for HSS twist bits with lubricant, per the material table. The one exception among the picks is Milwaukee's listing of spot drilling through metal decking.
  • The wrong holder. An SDS-plus bit needs an SDS-plus hammer; it does not fit an SDS-max hammer without an adapter, and SDS-max bits never fit SDS-plus tools. A round-shank bit in an SDS hammer needs a chuck adapter and rotation-only mode.
  • Wood. Brad-point, spade, Forstner and auger bits are the published choices for wood. The drill bit guides hub sorts every type by material.

Two beliefs are worth correcting. The first is that SDS-max bits fit an SDS-plus hammer, or the reverse; the shanks differ in diameter and the systems are not interchangeable, and only an SDS-max-to-plus adapter exists. The second is that an SDS chuck adapter turns a rotary hammer into a hammer drill for round-shank masonry bits. Chuck adapters are meant for rotation-only drilling with standard bits.

What about saw blades, grinder discs and sanding discs for concrete?

Cutting and smoothing concrete takes different accessories from drilling it: diamond blades for straight cuts, grit-edged blades for reciprocating saws, and silicon carbide abrasives for sanding stone and masonry. Many people searching for a concrete drill bit also need one of these.

  • Grinder discs for concrete. A diamond blade on an angle grinder, under the closed cutting guard, is the usual cutter for slabs, block and pavers. Our picks of segmented and turbo diamond blades compare grinder and saw sizes. Silicon carbide abrasive cut-off wheels are the abrasive alternative for masonry, concrete and stone.
  • Reciprocating saw blades for concrete. Toothed blades do not cut masonry. Lenox lists toothless carbide-grit and diamond-grit reciprocating blades for brick, tile, stone and cast iron. For the toothed blades that handle the timber around the masonry, see our demolition recip blade picks.
  • Oscillating tool blades for concrete. Multi-tool makers sell carbide-tipped or diamond-grit grout removal blades for clearing grout between tiles, and carbide-grit rasps for smoothing tile adhesive and mortar. These clean joints; they do not cut through slabs.
  • Sanding discs for concrete and stone. Klingspor recommends silicon carbide grain for stone and granite, ground wet to cut dust and heat. The diamond blade guide's section on grinder and sanding discs for concrete explains how this applies on an electric grinder.

For every product comparison on the site, including blades and abrasives, the buyer guides section lists each guide.

How do you drill a clean hole in concrete?

Fit a bit whose shank matches the tool and whose diameter matches the anchor, select hammer mode, then drill straight with steady pressure while the flutes carry the dust out. The points below come from the bit and tool makers behind this page.

  • Check the anchor's bit size. Anchors are sized to the hole; Milwaukee notes that its MX4 bits meet the ANSI standard used for common anchors.
  • Keep the bit straight. Carbide is brittle; levering a bit sideways in the hole can snap it.
  • Use the right mode. Hammer mode for masonry bits; rotation-only when a chuck or hex adapter is fitted to an SDS hammer. Milwaukee's manual lists 3 modes on its SDS-plus hammers (rotation only, rotary hammer and hammer only) and says to stop the motor before changing mode.
  • If the bit wanders. Twist drills tend to wander on a flat surface at the start; the causes and fixes are in our guide to why a drill bit wanders.
  • Swap a worn bit before it slows you down. A 2017 Annals of Work Exposures and Health bench study, drilling 41 holes per trial with a 13 mm carbide masonry bit in a hammer drill, found the bit drilled about 24% slower once it had 1,560 cm of concrete behind it than when it was new. Respirable silica at the study's two samplers spanned 0.41 to 0.89 mg/m³, the low end with the sharp bit and the high end with the dull one, and every reading sat far above the NIOSH limit. No newer study of this kind has been published openly, so these remain the most recent figures available. The authors recommend a bit replacement program rather than more push, which is a reason to buy a set with spares of your most-used anchor size.
Concrete bits still need the right holder. SDS-plus interface: For a tool accepting that specific system. SDS-max interface: A larger, different rotary-hammer shank. Other shanks: Conventional drill bits use other holding systems.
Choose the tool interface before the hole size.

Questions readers ask

Can I use SDS-plus bits in a regular hammer drill?

No. SDS-plus bits have a slotted 10 mm shank made for the SDS-plus holder on a rotary hammer. A hammer drill with a three-jaw chuck needs round-shank percussion bits such as the DeWalt DW5207.

Are four-cutter SDS bits better than two-cutter bits?

They are aimed at different work. Milwaukee sells its four-cutter MX4 bits for concrete with rebar; DeWalt's two-cutter SDS-plus bits are sold for anchor holes in concrete and masonry. Pick by what is in the wall rather than by cutter count alone.

Will these bits drill brick as well as concrete?

Yes. All four makers list masonry or brick and block alongside concrete.

Do SDS-plus bits fit an SDS-max rotary hammer?

Only through an SDS-max-to-plus adapter, which is sold for lighter work in a big hammer. The reverse, SDS-max bits in an SDS-plus hammer, is not possible.

What drill bit should I use for porcelain tile on a concrete wall?

A diamond bit cooled with water for the tile, with the hammer action off, since Bosch, Milwaukee and Makita all limit their tile bits to rotary drilling. Then change to a masonry bit and hammer mode for the concrete behind it once you are through the tile.
