Interactive tools for checking fit and choosing a blade

Two tools do the lookups that take longest by hand. The accessory finder shows the mounting specs a tool's maker publishes for a named model, such as blade size and arbor, chuck, collet, pad, spindle thread and no-load speed, so you can check fit before buying. The blade selector takes a circular saw and a material and points to the tooth count and grind that suit the cut. Both draw on the same manufacturer data as the guides, and both leave out anything the maker does not state.

Which tool do you need?

Use the accessory finder when the question is whether something fits a particular tool, and the blade selector when the question is which circular saw blade suits a material. The finder answers fit for many tool types: saws, drills and drivers, rotary hammers, routers, grinders, sanders and multi-tools. The selector answers one choice in depth, the blade for a circular saw cut.

Neither replaces the tool's manual. Both show what manufacturers publish, and the manual for your exact model is the final word on fit, permitted sizes and speed limits. The compatibility guides explain each interface in more depth than the tools can.

The finder and selector answer different questions. Accessory finder: Reads recorded specifications for a tool model. Blade selector: Suggests cutting characteristics for a stated task. Final confirmation: Check the exact tool and accessory documentation.
Neither tool replaces the manual or guarantees every real-world setup.

What does the accessory finder show?

The finder shows the lines from a maker's spec sheet that decide which accessories fit, cut down to the essentials for that tool type. Choose a tool type, then a brand and model, and the finder lists the mounting specs with their units and links to the guides for that interface. A saw shows blade diameter, arbor and no-load speed; a drill shows chuck size and type; a router shows collets; a sander shows pad size, hole count and attachment; a grinder shows disc size, spindle thread and speed.

Take a US circular saw as an example. The Makita 5007F lists a 7-1/4 in blade on a 5/8 in arbor at 5800 rpm no-load, so a replacement blade needs that diameter, that bore and a marked speed at or above that figure. A grinder makes the regional difference plain: the DeWalt DWE402 lists a 5/8–11 spindle, while the European Bosch GWS 12-125 Professional lists M14, so threaded accessories for one do not fit the other.

The accessory finder that looks up what fits your tool covers models from DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, Ryobi and Festool, most of them US-market models with a few European ones.

Example saw: blade and arbor 7-1/4 in / 5/8 in Makita 5007F, as Makita lists it.
Example saw: no-load speed 5800 rpm A blade's marked speed must be at or above this.
Example grinder thread (US) 5/8–11 European grinders such as the Bosch GWS 12-125 use M14.

Which finder row decides fit for each tool type?

One row usually settles it, and it differs by tool. For a router it is the collet: the DeWalt DWP611 lists 1/4 in only, while the DeWalt DW618 lists 1/4, 1/2 in, and the bit's shank must match one of them exactly. For an impact driver it is the holder, such as the 1/4 in hex holder on the DeWalt DCF845, which takes hex shanks only. For a rotary hammer it is the SDS type: the Milwaukee 2912-20 lists SDS-Plus.

For a sander it is the pad: the DeWalt DWE6423 lists a 5 in pad with 8 holes and hook-and-loop attachment. For a multi-tool it is the blade mount, and the gap between brands is wide: the DeWalt DCS356 lists a universal mount, while the Bosch GOP 40-30 Professional lists StarlockPlus, which takes Starlock and StarlockPlus accessories but not StarlockMax.

What does the one source label in the finder mean?

It marks a spec that was found in only one manufacturer document. Values supported by more than one document, such as a product page and a manual, are shown plainly; where only one was available, the value carries a one source label so you know to check it against your own manual. A spec the maker does not state at all is left out rather than estimated.

This matters most for regional versions and older models, where a maker's product page and manual sometimes disagree. Makita's RT0701C compact router is an example: Makita's US product page lists one collet in the box, while the manual's spec table gives two collet capacities, and the guides report both. How the site handles single-source and conflicting values in general is set out on the methodology page.

Read a tool result in the right order. Model and task: Confirm the input matches the equipment and work. Result fields: Read each applicable dimension and rating. Source limits: Notice one-source flags and missing information.
A missing specification is not permission to assume a fit.

How does the blade selector choose a circular saw blade?

It starts from the saw and the material, then applies the tooth-count and grind rules blade makers publish. The core rule is that fewer, square-topped teeth rip fast and more, bevelled teeth crosscut cleanly. On a 10 in blade, rip blades have as few as 24 teeth, general-purpose blades 40 to 50 teeth, and crosscut blades 60 to 80 teeth.

Material then narrows the grind. Veneered plywood and melamine call for steep Hi-ATB teeth of 30–40 degrees to avoid chipping, while laminate, plastics and non-ferrous metal call for TCG teeth, often with a negative hook of -2 to -6 degrees. Blade size and bore come from the saw, not the material: the US full-size circular saw takes a 5/8 in bore, and only the diameter marked on the saw may be used.

The circular saw blade selector applies these rules for you. The guide on choosing a circular saw blade by teeth and grind explains the reasoning behind each suggestion, and the buyer guide to plywood-cutting circular saw blades lists current blades that meet the sheet-goods rules.

Values come from each manufacturer's published specs. The tooth-count bands (24 rip, 40-50 general, 60-80 crosscut) agree with Rockler's guide. Hook angles vary by maker for the same task, so check the blade's own spec.

What if your tool is not in the finder?

Read the same specs from your tool's manual or rating plate and use the compatibility guide for that interface. The finder is a shortcut for listed models, not a complete catalogue. Every value it shows can be found in the maker's own documents, and the guides explain how to read them for any model.

The checks are the same whatever the tool: find the full model number, identify the interface, confirm the permitted accessory size, compare speed ratings, and make sure the guard and any adapter are the tool maker's own. The guides to what fits which tool set these out step by step, and the guides for circular saw arbor sizes and grinder disc sizes cover the two interfaces people look up most.

When can a tool result mislead you?

When the tool in your hands is not exactly the model listed, or when fit is read as permission to use. Regional versions of one model can differ in bore, thread or collet, so match the full model number on the plate. Makita's European HS6601 saw, for example, lists a different bore depending on the country version.

Fit is also not the same as safe. Makita warns that an accessory attaching to a tool does not make it safe; its rated speed and size must suit the tool too. A blade with the right arbor but a larger diameter than the saw is marked for may not be guarded properly, and a grinder wheel that threads on may be rated below the grinder's speed.

Questions readers ask

Does the accessory finder need an account or collect data?

No. It runs in your browser with no sign-in. It loads the model list from the site once, and the tool type and model you choose are not sent anywhere.

Why does the finder leave some specs blank?

Because the maker does not state them. The finder shows only specs found in manufacturer documents and leaves out anything that would have to be estimated.

Can the blade selector tell me which brand to buy?

No. It points to a tooth count, grind and size for the material and saw. The buyer guides list current blades that meet those specs, without ranking them.

Does a match in the finder mean the accessory is safe?

Not on its own. The accessory's rated speed must be at least the tool's maximum speed, and its size must be one the tool is made for.
